Phuket: Old Phuket Town

Phuket Old Town was built on riches reaped from Phuket's tin boom of last century, when the metal was an extremely valuable commodity. The typical architectural style of the region is described as Sino-Portuguese and has mainly a Mediterranean character. Phuket Old Town is compact enough to stroll around in. There are many shops and mansions. The shops fronts facing the street are very narrow, but stretch back a long way in. Several shops have old wooden doors with Chinese fretwork carvings, especially along the Dibuk Road. The best time to do this is early in the morning or after the day has lost its heat. There are enough restaurants and cafés to provide you with refreshments. Walking tours in this area which is called Old Phuket are easy to find and very pleasant. Other streets with similar structures are Phang-ng, Yaowarat, Thalang, and Krabi.

How to get there

  • From Phuket International Airport taxis from the airport to Patong are a steep 800 baht (45 min); meter-taxis 700+ baht. Minibuses limit the damage to 180 baht (and on the way the driver stops to "get information about your destination" at a shop, where you will be sold tickets for activities. It's a scam. Don't buy). All the drivers at the airport seem to be working in collusion making negotiating a cheaper price impossible. An even cheaper (however, also more time consuming) option is to take the comfortable air conditioned airport shuttle bus to Phuket Town (85 baht, 1 hr), and switch there to a local bus to Patong (see "By bus" section, below). Alternatively, if you know the right road, you can get off the bus after you pass the Big C shopping centre on the right (the airport bus goes to the left there, and the road to Kathu and then Patong is to the right from the same intersection), and try to catch a local bus to Patong there, which also passes that intersection. Local buses to Patong are clearly marked in English and in Thai. Recently Airport bus to Patong town has also started service with fare of 130 Bhats. Bus leave from Airport Bus Terminal every hour.
  • Regular buses connect to Phuket Town (30 baht, 30–45 minutes) every 30 minutes or so between 07:00 and 18:00. The route starts from the southern end of the beach, after which the bus crawls through town (via Bangla Road), stopping to pick up passengers, before finally heading off across the hills, and going via Kathu, then passing near Big C before entering the Phuket Town. In Phuket Town, those songteows (2/3 bench pickup trucks) are usually waiting for passengers near the local market (1.5 km west of the Phuket bus station). (see Phuket Town for how to get around the bus stations and find the local transport)

Karon Beach refers to a beach, and the town adjoining it, on the western coast of Phuket, Thailand. Karon Beach is very long, 5km (three miles), with fine white sand that squeaks when you walk on it throughout its entire length. The beach is a popular destination for tourists. Generally quieter than neighbouring Patong Beach, it is especially popular among families and couples, and less popular with singles than Patong. The sand is very white, and squeaks audibly when walked upon. The southern point has a fine coral reef stretching toward Kata and Bu Island. Also, there is a wide pedestrian, bicycle path on the beachside of the road running the length of the beach.

Phuket Kata Beach

Kata Yai(Yai is Big) and Kata Noi(Noi is small) are two adjacent beaches on the west coast of Phuket, directly south of Karon. Kata Yai is sometimes called simply Kata Beach. Twenty kilometres from Phuket town, beautiful Kata is a scenic gem, its clear water flanked by hills, and picturesque Ko Pu sits offshore. Kata Beach is comprised of a half-moon crescent of white sand lining a bay cut deep between two green headlands. Kata Beach consists of Kata Noi and Kata Yai Beach, a good swimming area for children due to the shallow sea. Kata is an all round favourite due to its spectacular palm-lined beach, restaurants are well-priced and food is goodshops can be grouped into gift, tailor, music, and massage. lively but not raucous nightlife and varied accommodation options all close to the beach. There are many hotels. One kilometre south of Kata Yai is Kata Noi, a smaller beach with fewer hotels and less development. The beach is superb. Laem Phromthep (Phromthep ดCape) is a headland forming the extreme south end of Phuket, the one of most important and popular place of Phuket. Promthep cape is Phuket's symbol and you will recognize its tall sugar palms on car plates having a special number. There is a saying that you have not been to Phuket unless you visit Laem Phromthep. Each day hundreds of tourists from all over the world come to watch what has been described as the most beautiful sunset to be seen in Phuket.

There is a great spot to see the most beautiful sunset and to take a photo for souvenir. Once done with your sunset photo, there are only two things left to do: a bit of touristic shopping if you like stuff made of shells or 'I love Phuket' tee shirts or what I recommend instead, have diner 'Al Fresco' at Promthep Restaurant. The sky displays its last colors over the bay while enjoying a good seafood dinner.

How to get there

If you are coming from Wat Chalong, travel along the coast road to Chalong junction and then on to Rawai Beach. From there, a drive south will take you to Promthep Cape. As there are potentially a number of stops on this trip, it might be more convenient to move from one site to the next by taxi. Alternatively, take one of the many tours available from Phuket town and the hotels/guesthouses in the area.

Phuket: Kamala Beach

Kamala Beach, Hat Kamala is a large beach approximately 10 miles north of Patong Beach. The beach is undeveloped with coral reefs on the north side and surfing in the low season. Kamala provides a haven for those who prefer the quieter life. Although the southern end of the beach can get busy in the high season, the northern end is peaceful all year round. It is a tourist beach in the high season and a sleepy seaside Muslim village in the low season. At the southern end, has a number of small 20-30 room hotels for the low/medium budget traveller. Friendly service and village feel and a diversity of restaurants and small bars can be found on this small road. There is a market on Wednesday and Friday nights, as well as a weekly Saturday market.

Phuket: Surin Beach

Surin Beach (Ao Surin, Hat Surin) is on the west coast of Phuket, about 15 km north of Patong. Surin Beach still has a small village atmosphere, but this is gradually changing as more and more major housing developments and hotel projects get underway.

The beach is a wide stretch of fine. Surrounded by vivid green palms Surin beach is a beautiful bay of glistening emerald jade clear water and beautiful white sand, and is lined with tall casuarina trees and small Thai style restaurantsThe limestone salt content allows for a languid float whilst contemplating the colours flickering on the horizon. It is a good bathing beach although when the tide is in it can slope a little steeply into the sea making it a little hazardous for children. There is some pleasant snorkeling around both headlands but nothing spectacular.

Surin is sometimes called "millionaire's row" because of the high end villas on hills overlooking the bay, and film stars or VIPs like to stay there, as they can get away from the crowds. The whole area is awash with high-end hotels and housing which in turn has created opportunities for high-end restaurants and wine bars.

  • Blue-and-white songthaews can be taken from Bus Terminal 1 in Phuket Town. Cost is B50,and they continue on to the next beach some 3km distant. On return, they appear to stop at about 4pm, so you will need to take a taxi if you can find one at all! Will cost B600 (the "official" price).
  • Tuk-tuks lying in wait at the intersection in front of the beach demand a non-negotiable 300 baht for the trip to the next beach along.

Kalim Beach

Phuket: Kalim Beach

Kalim Beach is located just north of Patong Beach and, unlike its famous neighbour, still retains some of its local Thai touches. Kalim Beach is a quiet, attractive area that is far enough away to be away from it all, yet still close enough to the action to be fun. The sea around the Hat Kalim offers excellent coral reefs making it attractive to people who like snorkeling and diving at high tide but it is pretty rocky and not very attractive for swimmers. The highlight of the beach is surfing in low season. Kalim is considered one of the best surfing spots in Phuket, and some competitions. When the tide is out a substantial amount of coral is revealed and it can be interesting to wander around to see the variety of living creatures the coral maintains (starfish, etc.). A concrete parking and vendor space at its southern end in front of the local school cuts the beach into two parts and hosts a popular small street food market with half-a-dozen stands selling mataba, noodle soup, roti, Thai ice-creams and other delicacies, as well as soft drinks.
